Show Rundown: Week of May 27

Coming off the Memorial Day Holiday, we have 42 live music performances in the Berkshires this week, including classical, jazz, rock, pop, folk, bluegrass, and blues, plus some experimental and improvisational. Below are a few highlights of the week ahead, followed by our comprehensive show rundown.

Classical and Opera

We have three classical performances in the county this week. On Saturday afternoon, you can attend the Berkshire Music School 2024 Gala Featuring Flutist Brandon Patrick George at Ventfort Hall in  Lenox. Brandon is a leading flute soloist and Grammy® Award-winning chamber musician whose repertoire extends from the Baroque era to today. In the evening, you can catch the first of the Southfield Church’s 2024 concerts with Irina Nuzova, piano – Anton Everts, piano – Teodor Everts, flute. The program features works by J.S. Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, Francisco Tarrega, Isaac Albeniz, H. Villa Lobos, and Augustin Barrios. Sunday afternoon at Tanglewood’s Ozawa Hall, you will find the 2024 Berkshire Lyric Masterworks Concert. The performance will feature Bruckner Mass no. 3 in f minor, Brahms’ Nänie, and Arvo Pärt’s Da Pacem Dominum. 100-voice Berkshire Lyric Chorus with soloists and full orchestra.

Jazz

We have five jazz performances, starting on Thursday night with Benny Kohn & Stefanie Weber performing at Dottie’s and Dorothy’s in Pittsfield. Listen to Stefanie tap dance while Benny plays amazing jazz tunes on piano. Saturday night, you’ll find the David Bartley Quartet at Dottie’s and Dorothy’s. David is back again at Dottie’s Sunday morning at the Domingo Brunch featuring duo David Bartley and Pete Toigo. Sunday midday, catch the Jazz Brunch with Orson Handel & Matt Schneider at Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield. In the evening, you can catch Michael Junkins and Friends at The Lion’s Den in Stockbridge.

Popular (Rock, Pop, Folk, Blues, etc.)

Our calendar is dominated by the popular music category, with over 30 performances this week – we can’t highlight them all but will mention a few (see our calendar or show rundown below for all the performances).

The music starts on Tuesday night with the Riverside Brothers performing at Methuselah Bar & Lounge in Pittsfield.

There is no music on Wednesday night, but there are many great shows on Thursday night. High Tea and Katie Herbst are at the Egremont Barn. We saw High Tea last year at The Stationery Factory and really enjoyed their folk-punk sound. Folk musician Jude Roberts performs at the Down County Social Club at Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield. Up-and-coming local band from Williamstown, 5 Pound Horse, performs at Dream Away Lodge in Becket. Local favorite Wanda Houston is at The Lion’s Den in Stockbridge.

Friday night, catch the soulful rock and Americana artist King Kyote at Egremont Barn. This talented performer was on NBC’s “American Song Contest,” and his single “Get Out Alive” was released on Atlantic Records in March of 2022. He opened for The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow at their April Egremont Barn shows, and we really enjoyed his music. Folk-rocker Lisa Michelle Anderson is at the Dream Away Lodge. Pink Floyd fans won’t want to miss Pink Floyd’s The Wall: A Theatrical Concert Experience at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield. The performance repeats on Saturday night.

Saturday night, the folk-punk-pop band Bella’s Bartok performs at The Stationery Factory in Dalton. Country blues, ragtime, and jazz artist Hubby Jenkins (pictured above) is at The Guthrie Center in Great Barrington. He’s played as part of Rhiannon Giddens’ band. Bluegrass and old-time musicians Morgan O’Kane & Ezekial Healy are at Dream Away Lodge, while Brother Sal Blues Band is at The Lion’s Den. Local favorites The BTUs are at Egremont Barn, featuring local musicians Steve Ide, Bobby Macveety, and Rob Putnam. The Foundry in West Stockbridge is hosting a special LGBTQ+ Pride Month Kickoff Celebration featuring music by Molly Weinberg, Noh Bailey, and Nuri.

On the Sunday afternoon “winery and brewery circuit,” you’ll find Nate Martel and Rhees Williams at Antimony Brewing, Tom Corrigan at Balderdash Cellars, and the F.A.R. Trio in the Taproom at Bright Ideas Brewing in North Adams.  One of our first summer outdoor concerts takes place Sunday afternoon at Lilac Park in downtown Lenox, when the pop-funk band The Far Out performs, weather permitting. Finally, Jack Waldheim & the Criminal Hearts wind up your Sunday at Dream Away Lodge.

Something Else

This week, we have one performance in our Something Else category. The InBetweens will perform Friday night at Dottie’s and Dorothy’s. Mike Gamble (electric guitar/effects), Noah Jarrett (double bass), and Conor Elmes (drums) all hail from The New England Conservatory. The New York Times’ Nate Chinen explained, “This exploratory trio filter jazz protocols through an indie-rock lens”.

You can read about all of these performances and more in our day-by-day show rundown below or jump right to our music calendar.
