Show Rundown: Week of March 18

As Tuesday ushers in the official arrival of spring, we find ourselves reminiscing about the past week’s blissful moments—soaking in the warmth of 68-degree temperatures, witnessing the emergence of crocuses in the garden, and relishing in the freedom of a bicycle ride in shorts. While Mother Nature may still have a few surprises up her sleeve, mentally, we’ve put winter in the rear-view mirror and eagerly anticipate a glorious spring blossoming with live music in the Berkshires. Following a jam-packed St. Patrick’s Day weekend, this week is a little quieter, with 34 performances on our music calendar, including classical, jazz, rock, pop, folk, blues, and tango. Below are a few highlights of the week ahead, followed by our comprehensive show rundown.

Classical

We have one classical performance this week on Saturday afternoon at St. James Place in Great Barrington: Carissimi’s Jephte and Missa l’Homme armé. The Crescendo vocal ensemble presents two pieces by the Italian composer Giacomo Carissimi.

Jazz

We have six jazz performances this week, starting Tuesday with the Nocturnals Jazz Duo at Methuselah Bar & Lounge in Pittsfield. Saturday night, you can see Sing & Swing – A Jazz At Lincoln Center Presents Production at Mahaiwe in Great Barrington. The performance features Co-Music Directors Bria Skonberg and Benny Benack III (pictured above). Also on Saturday, the David Bartley Quartet performs at Dorothy’s Estaminet in Pittsfield. Sunday morning, you can catch Jason Ennis & Natalia Bernal at Dottie’s Coffee Lounge in Pittsfield, or at midday, catch Tarik Shah at Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield. On Sunday evening, you’ll find Michael Junkins and Friends at The Lion’s Den. Joining Michael this week are “The Regulars” with Will Hudgins on Vibes.

Popular (Rock, Pop, Folk, Blues, etc.)

We have over 20 performances in the popular music category – we can’t highlight them all but will mention a few (see our calendar or show rundown below for all the performances). On Wednesday night, you can listen to Acoustic Guitar featuring Clara Guatta at Dorothy’s Estaminet in Pittsfield.

Thursday night, you won’t want to miss The World’s Greatest Sing-a-long at Egremont Barn. The event is hosted by the Barn’s Nick Keene and Hannah Bracken and will be backed by two Music in the Berkshires Featured Musicians: Steve Ide and Brian Kantor, who will be joined by Rob Putnam, Miles Lally, and others. Or you can head over to the Lion’s Den to catch the Troy, NY folk trio Hold On Honeys at The Lion’s Den in Stockbridge.

On Friday, catch local favorites Misty Blues at Dorothy’s Estaminet in Pittsfield, Ben Kohn at Shire Beer Company in Dalton, Wanda Houston at Firefly Gastropub in Lenox, or Lara Tupper and Bobby Sweet at The Lion’s Den. If you want to help a good cause while having some fun, then run over to the Standing Room Only Dance Party with Brian Benlien at Balderdash Cellars in Richmond to raise funds for Rich Powell, who is running in the Boston Marathon. All proceeds go to Boston Children’s Hospital. Also on Friday, you’ll find Holywater Undertow at Egremont Barn. The band features Mark Mercier of Max Creek,  “Rev” Tor Krautter of Dead Man’s Waltz, Dan Broad of Moondance, and Conor Meehan of The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow. Jackson Browne lovers will want to head over to The Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield to see Running On Jackson: The Premier Jackson Browne Tribute Concert.

Saturday night you can see local folk-rocker Johnny Irion, just back from a west coast tour, at the Becket Arts Center. Soul, R&B, and pop artist Glori Wilder is at The Lion’s Den, while Music in the Berkshires Featured Musician Jordan Weller and The Feathers will be jamming at Egremont Barn. Meanwhile, the Evan Lanoue Trio will be up at the Knox Trail Inn in East Otis, and the Celtic band Kilashandra will perform at Methuselah Bar & Lounge in Pittsfield.

On the Sunday afternoon “winery and brewery circuit,” you’ll find The Mikes at Balderdash Cellars,  Michael Duffy at Antimony Brewing in Lenox, and David Clark Carroll of Daring Coyotes at Bright Ideas Brewing in North Adams.

This week, we have two performances in our Something Else category. On Friday night, catch the tango quartet Cuarteto Rotterdam at The Foundry in West Stockbridge.
