Music in the Berkshires: Week of October 9

As autumn’s vibrant colors paint Berkshire County’s landscapes, the music scene is also bursting into full bloom with an astounding 51 live performances next week, a big leap from the 38 shows we enjoyed last week. The performances range across many genres, including jazz, rock, pop, folk, blues, and classical. Below are a few highlights, followed by the full show rundown. But before moving on, if you’ve not already done so, please subscribe to our free weekly Show Rundown to receive this content in your inbox each Monday – plus, you’ll receive exclusive information not found on our website or social media pages about recently announced shows and hot tickets. Our calendar is absolutely bursting at the seams with 13 jazz performances this week. It starts on Monday night when the Daryl Lowery Trio performs at Methuselah Bar & Lounge in Pittsfield. On Wednesday, Standard Edition performs at The Lions Den in Stockbridge.

Thursday is crazy, with five jazz performances! Music in the Berkshires Featured Musician Andy Wrba and Friends perform at The Lion’s Den in Stockbridge as part of Andy’s month-long Thursday residency. Peggy Stern performs solo at Gateways Inn in Lenox. Luke Franco leads the Jazz Jam at Dewey Hall in Sheffield. The Michael Junkins Quartet performs at the Swing Dance Night at Berkshire Palate in Pittsfield. And finally, the Jimmy Greene Group performs as part of the Visiting Artist Series at Williams College in Williamstown.

Friday, you’ll find Karen Tchougourian at Gateways Inn in Lenox, and on Saturday, you can attend Jazz Concert: A Tribute to Art Blakey with George Gables, David Schnitter, and Steve Davis at The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown or see The Lucky Five at The Lions Den in Stockbridge.

Sunday morning, you can catch the Jazz Brunch with Natalia Bernal & Jason Ennis at Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield. In the evening, you can catch Michael Junkins and Friends at The Lions Den, Stockbridge, or just up the road in West Stockbridge at The Foundry, you can see a unique performance: Ayumi Ishito / Daniel Carter / Demian Richardson Trio w/ Special Guest Fred Moten.

Classical music lovers have several options this weekend. On Saturday afternoon, you can attend Berkshire Bach: The Solo Harpsichord With Mariken Palmboom at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington. On Sunday, you’ll find the Dover String Quartet at South Mountain Concert Hall in Pittsfield. They will perform Haydn – String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 74, No. 3, Florence Price – String Quartet No. 1 in G Major, and Schubert – String Quartet in D Minor, D. 810. Or you can see Clarion Concerts presents Young Concert Artists on Tour at St. James Place in Great Barrington, featuring the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Marx, Salina Fisher, and Robert Schumann. And veering slightly from the genre, classical lovers may also enjoy seeing improvisational musicians Gelineau-Baldwin-Corsano Trio with Marie Carroll & Rebecca Schrader Duo at The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown.

The remaining 34 shows fall into the popular music categories of rock, pop, blues, and folk. While we can’t highlight all of them, a few highlights include American Idol and MA-based singer-songwriter Katherine Winston at Oasis Bar and Grill in Lee on Wednesday [Note: we just learned after publication that Oasis has closed for the season]. Your Thursday choices include Michael Aaron at Firehouse Cafe & Bistro in Adams, Nate Martel at Antimony Brewing in Lenox, folk artist Dianne Cluck at Dream Away Lodge in Becket, Beth Rose at Egremont Barn, and the Diego Mongue Band at Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield. This event is a fundraiser for the band’s travel expenses to the International Blues Challenge (IBC) competition in Memphis, TN in January 2024. Frontman Diegeo Mongue also plays with the Misty Blues band and is a 3rd-year music major at Williams College.

Friday, you’ll find local folk favorite Bobby Sweet at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield, while Music in the Berkshires Featured Musician Milton returns to the region, performing at The Lion’s Den in Stockbridge. Down at Egremont Barn, you can see rock, folk, and pop artist James Maddock while folk artist Liana Gabel performs up at Dream Away Lodge in Becket.

On Saturday, the legendary metal rock band Quiet Riot comes to The Stationery Factory in Dalton, while Saurkraut Seth with Julia Gottlieb and Friends perform at Egremont Barn. Up at Dream Away Lodge, catch some folk and bluegrass with Morgan O’Kane & Ezekiel Healy

Sunday morning, you’ll find folk artist Eli Elkus at Dottie’s Coffee Lounge in Pittsfield. Some mid-day music options include The Juckets at Pizzeria Boema in Lenox, Sky Full of Dippers at Balderdash Cellars in Richmond, and The Olivia Show: A Tribute to Olivia Newton-John at Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield. Sunday night, you can catch an incredibly strong pairing when Humbird (pictured above) and Sean Rowe perform at Egremont Barn. The title track “Pharmakon” off Humbird’s 2019 debut album has over 23 million plays on Spotify, and we are lucky to have them stop in the county on their national tour. Sean Rowe has played at Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival and performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
