The third week of July brings another bounty of great live music to The Berkshires, with over 76 performances featuring various styles and genres, including classical, opera, jazz, rock, Americana, pop, folk, and blues. Here are a few highlights, followed by the complete show rundown, as we continue this week with our shortened format.
One event I’m looking forward to is the Mountain Day with The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow (pictured above) at Bousquet on Saturday. In addition to hearing the full band, you’ll have the chance to hear each of the supergroup’s members perform with their own bands. Fans of the group will want to read our interview with The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow posted this past week. On Friday night at the Egremont Barn, the band will also play a special album-release show for their new album, Late Night, Laid Back and Live, which was recorded there late last year.
We have several national touring bands in the region this week. Darlingside, formed at Williams College back in 2009, will return to their home to play a show at The Clark Institute on Wednesday. Genre-bending artist Cécile McLorin Salvant, who draws from folk, baroque, jazz, and country, performs at the Mahaiwe on Thursday night. Phoebe Hunt, who blends her classical violin/fiddle training with Appalachian Old Time and Texas Swing genres, comes to Hancock Shaker Village on Friday night.
Classical music lovers will find 9 performances at Tanglewood this week, with something available every day except Tuesday. Other classical shows in the county include Aston Magna: Baroque Celebration II on Saturday at St. James Place and Close Encounters with Music: Moonlight Sonatas I and II concerts on Saturday and Sunday at Chesterwood and the Berkshire School, respectively.
Opera lovers will find the Berkshire Opera Festival presents: Breaking the Mold: Baroque, Bel Canto, and Beyond at Mahaiwe.
Jazz lovers have many opportunities to catch jazz in the usual places, such as Gateways Inn and The Lion’s Den. You may also want to catch the Richard Stanmeyer Trio on Saturday at The Foundry in West Stockbridge. Local jazz performer Michael Junkins has a busy week, performing Friday night at Gateways Inn and then twice on Sunday – with Mary Ann Palermo & First Take at First Congregational Church of Lee in the afternoon and over at the Lion’s Den on Sunday evening.
