Music in the Berkshires: Week of August 7

This past week, refreshing autumn-like weather settled on The Berkshires, foreshadowing the end of summer. But don’t despair – drink up these next three weeks of August, and also remind yourself that September and October are two of the most beautiful months here. Live music continues to be bountiful, with 76 performances this week featuring multiple genres, including classical, jazz, rock, Americana, pop, folk, blues, hip-hop, and rap. Here are a few highlights, followed by the full show rundown.

Jazz lovers in The Berkshires will find great jazz in the usual places. The Bobby MacVeety Trio will be at The Lion’s Den Wednesday. Gateways Inn has Teri Roiger on Thursday, Sherri Buxton on Friday, and Peggy Stern on Saturday. Also on Saturday, Benny Kohn & Joanne Redding perform at the Becket Arts Center. On Sunday, start your day at Race Brook Lodge for their Jazz Brunch with Mary Ann McSweeney, and you can finish the day – and the week – with Michael Junkins and Friends back at The Lion’s Den.

Tanglewood has eleven performances this week, with highlights including the day-long Tanglewood On Parade at multiple venues on Tuesday, and Andris Nelsons conducts Adolphe, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky featuring Yo-Yo Ma, cello (pictured above) on Sunday. There is one other classical performance on our calendar: The Stockbridge Sinfonia: Salute to Women Composers on Sunday at St. James Place, Great Barrington.

Rock, pop, folk, and related genres make up the other 50+ performances in the county – too many to highlight all of them. National touring musicians in the region this week include Canadian singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards, who is currently touring with The Outlaw Music Festival. She performs a free concert at The Clark Art Institute on Tuesday. Her 2002 chilling song “Six O’Clock News” was on my playlist for years, so don’t be surprised if you find me trekking up to The Clark Tuesday.

Devon Allman & Donavon Frankenreiter make a stop on their record-breaking “See It All” tour, in which they will play a concert in each of the 50 states in under 50 days. They will be at the Mahaiwe on Wednesday evening. Magnolia Boulevard brings its unique blend of rock, blues, soul, and jam to The Stationery Factory on Thursday. The National Reserve is back at the Egremont Barn Friday. The Grammy-nominated Pittsfield native Matt Cusson returns to the county to perform at the Guthrie Center on Saturday. His song “One of Those Nights” has received numerous awards, and he’s toured with Christina Aguilera, singing the acclaimed duet “Say Something” with her.

Berkshire County favorites performing this week include Rev Tor at Washington Town Park on Monday. Also on Monday, Misty Blues is at The Barn Kitchen & Bar in Williamstown. On Wednesday, The Hilltown Trio, featuring Chris Merenda of The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow, will perform at portaVia in Dalton. Johnny Irion & Mike Stinson perform at Egremont Barn on Thursday. Wanda Houston performs at the Great Barrington Town Hall Friday, and the Jackson Whalan Band is at the Egremont Barn Saturday.
