Show Rundown: Week of February 19

Monday is the President’s Day holiday, and most Berkshire County schools are on vacation for the week. Whether you’re enjoying a week of leisurely escape or sticking to your routine, there’s no shortage of live music experiences to bring you joy. We have 39 performances on our music calendar this week, spanning an eclectic array of genres, including classical, jazz, rock, pop, folk, country, soul, bluegrass, blues, flamenco, and spoken word. Below are a few highlights of the week ahead, followed by our full show rundown

Classical

We have two classical music performances this week. Thursday night, you can listen to Joana Genova, violin – Faculty Recital at Williams College. Joana will perform works by Ravel, Gershwin, Debussy, and others. Sunday afternoon, you’ll find Momenta String Quartet With Pianist Manon Hutton-Dewys at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington. This free performance features 20th and 21st-century works by women composers, including piano quintets by Amy Beach and Grazyna Bacewicz and works for string quartet by Florence Price and Ileana Perez-Velasquez.

Jazz

We have six jazz performances, starting Thursday with Music in the Berkshires featured musician Andy Wrba & Friends at The Lion’s Den in Stockbridge. Ed Moran, Benny Kohn, and Conor Meehan join Andy this week.

Saturday night has three great performances. At the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, you can catch 10 by Duke: An Exploration of Duke Ellington’s Music, presented by Berkshires Jazz. Up in North Adams, you’ll find BAAMS Presents: David Gilmore & The BAAMS Faculty at Studio 9. Or, you can catch the David Bartley Quartet at Dorothy’s Estaminet in Pittsfield.

On Sunday afternoon, grab brunch with Bobby MacVeety at Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield. Sunday night, Michael Junkins and Friends are at The Lion’s Den. Joining Michael this week is  Don Mikkelsen on Trombone.

Popular (Rock, Pop, Folk, Blues, etc.)

We have over 25 performances in the popular music category – we can’t highlight them all but will mention a few (see our calendar or show rundown below for all the performances).

For the skiers hitting the slopes during school vacation week, you can listen to Jack Waldheim on Monday night at the Drifters restaurant at Bousquet in Pittsfield. Wednesday, the Riverside Brothers are at Bousquet, while Mike McMann is at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Hancock.

Thursday night is Indie Night at The Stationery Factory, featuring the Krishna Guthrie Band (pictured above). The Berkshire Guthrie family lineage continues to provide the region with incredible music. We enjoyed seeing Krishna, grandson of Arlo, perform as part of the Black Legacy Project at Stationery Factory in January.

Friday night features four local favorites. Misty Blues is at Dorothy’s Estaminet in Pittsfield. 5 Pound Horse, who we went to see Wednesday night in North Adams, is performing again at Bondhu in New Ashford. Wanda Houston is at Firefly Gastropub in Lenox, and StompBox Trio is at The Lion’s Den in Stockbridge.

If you enjoy tribute bands, then this is a great week for you. Friday night, Harvest & Rust – A Neil Young Experience performs at Egremont Barn. On Saturday night, you can catch Changes in Latitudes: The Premier Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield or Vyntage Skynyrd, a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band, at The Stationery Factory in Dalton.

Saturday night features several other local favorites. Music in the Berkshires Featured Musician Milton plays at The Lion’s Den, while Glori Wilder performs her mix of R&B, soul, and pop down at Egremont Barn. For something a bit different, you can see Johanna Hedva in Concert at MASS MoCA in North Adams. An artist, writer, and musician, Hedva’s music is described as “hag blues, succubus folk, and bog-witch lullabies.”

Sunday morning, you can see rock, pop, and folk artist Tyra Nurmi at Dottie’s Coffee Lounge in Pittsfield. In the afternoon, catch Mike Duffy at Antimony Brewing in Lenox or Gina and Ben at Balderdash Cellars in Richmond.

We have one performance on the calendar this week in our Something Else category. On Saturday night, Race Brook Lodge is hosting Flamenco Night with Alba Musik. Their music is described as “Flamenco Fusion.”  Note: Ursula Rucker’s performance, which was previously posted, has been postponed.
